2001 Dargon Writers' Summit Photo

In the past we've sometimes spent so much time on how to run the magazine and mentoring program and things like that that we actually didn't include anything about writing in our working sessions! Well, this year we made up for that.

One of the most important parts of any story is the lead-in, or "the hook". In order to understand what makes for a good "hook", we played a little game. Everyone wrote the first couple lines of a story, and then we read them all. In the spirit of television's "Survivor" and "Weakest Link", we then voted the author of the worst lead-in "off the island". The next round there was one less person, and so on until only one was left.

In this picture, Carlo is coming up with his third good hook in a row to avoid elimination. The pen he's using is from Jon Evans, who couldn't make this year's Summit. However, he sent along pens with each writer's name and the DargonZine Web site's URL, which you can see in this picture. Talk about product placement!
