2002 Dargon Writers' Summit Photo

When the group first assembled in Edinburgh, our first activity had been to take a witchery, ghosts, and gore tour. After that, our task was to write a ghost story that would be told during our visit to Slains Castle.

Slains Castle was Bram Stoker's inspiration for his novel "Dracula", but today it is a lonely, unmarked, roofless, abandoned ruin atop a high crag over the restless North Sea. We arrived at midnight, under the light of a livid orange full moon and set up a small fire in an abandoned room. By its flickering light, we each took turns reading our ghost stories.

This exercise was intended to do more than let us experience these tales in a dramatic setting. We also were given immediate, real-time feedback on our stories, rather than the delayed feedback that comes over our writers' discussion list. And we also learned a great deal about the difference between oral and written storytelling, which is much larger than one might imagine.
