2004 Dargon Writers' Summit Photo

Fuzzy man Jim Owens was our local host for this year's Summit, and here he can be seen admiring the view of Mt. Hood from the Cloud Cap Inn.

Jim did a fabulous job hosting under difficult circumstances. Often traveling for his job, he flew in from a ten-day business trip in Cincinnati on Wednesday -- the day the Summit began -- and didn't get back to his home until the Summit was over! In addition to playing tour guide, both Jim and his wife Naomi made several lonely four-hour trips back and forth from the cabin to the Portland airport to meet arriving writers or drop someone off. That was typical of the kind of self-sacrifices and flexibility that Jim demonstrated in order to ensure that our writers were comfortable, relaxed, and well-entertained.

As if that wasn't enough, Jim also took the initiative to become our head cook, preparing omelets, burgers, and everything we needed while we were at the cabin. It was particularly à propos that he made omelets for everyone, since he has a forthcoming Black Idol story entitled “Eggs For Breakfast” which is particularly savory.

Our thanks go out to Jim for doing a wonderful job of hosting and for making everyone's trip to Orgeon both pleasant and inspiring.
