2004 Dargon Writers' Summit Photo

After the fish hatchery, we visited two of the more than a dozen spectacular waterfalls that line the Columbia River Gorge. Our first stop was at Horsetail Falls, which plunges 176 feet into a shallow pool right at the edge of the Historic Columbia River Highway. Then, just two miles further down the highway, we stopped at Multnomah Falls, which is shown in this photograph, behind longtime Dargon Project member Rena Deutsch.

Before we could explore the falls, though, we had to eat, and Jim had made reservations for us to dine at the 1925 stone Multnomah Falls Lodge that sits at the foot of the cascade. After a delicious meal, largely spent staring out the lodge's glass ceiling, we went outside to get a closer look at this natural wonder.

Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. The water of Multnomah Creek begins its journey in springs beneath Larch Mountain, just south of the Columbia River Gorge, and descends 620 feet from the escarpment to the river in two cascades of 550 and 70 feet.

The bridge you see crosses over the pool between the upper and lower falls
