After Hoover Dam, Dafydd drove us north along Lake Mead through increasingly mountainous terrian. We finally arrived at Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park, a spectacular outcropping of vivid red sandstone in the middle of the Mojave Desert. We made several stops in the valley, including places caleld the Seven Sisters, Rainbow Vista, the Beehives, and a short walk to Elephant Rock. But the highlight of the afternoon was a half-mile hike down a wash in the middle of a high, narrow crevasse to an old hideout called Mouse's Tank. The canyon walls included fascinating caves and rock formations, and petroglyphs dating back as much as 3,000 years. The view from the park was equally dramatic, with the red soil and rocks in the foreground contrasting sharply with the verdant valley and hills beyond, as you can see in this photo. Our driver and Summit host, Dafydd, also appears here. Despite his hosting a Summit in a city 2,500 miles from his home, everyone was very happy with his choice of accommodations, activities, and meals. It was a very memorable trip for all of us! | |
