In this shot from our morning working sessions, Jon Evans is modeling his DargonZine tee shirt from the 1997 Summit, which is now ten years old. During our working time, we examined a number of topics. In one, we attempted to define what it means to be an "aspiring writer", which includes willingness to learn, valuing critiques, and a desire to share one's works with other writers or readers. Another interesting discussion was around where story ideas come from. We agreed that story ideas could come from books, music, television, dreams, maps, and other stories. Other fertile grounds were our personal demons and philosophy, as well as potential inventions. Sometimes we might just start with a character and start writing and see where his or her story goes. And we also respond to external motivators like challenges, deadlines, contests, and opportunities to collaborate with our fellow writers. | |
