We spent another afternoon trekking around Mount Charleston, the 8th highest peak in Nevada. Our first stop was the gift shop, which was fortunate because several people hadn't dressed for the chilly temperatures above 8,000 feet, so the gift shop sold several extra sweatshirts that day! Our next stop was the Robbers' Roost trail, a path which starts amid a forest of pinion pines and mountain mahogany: the only trees we found in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The trail tapered quickly into towering granite cliffs, and the mountain goats among us shed followers, until we had gone about as far as we could go without climbing gear. At the top, our intrepid leadership team posed for this shot. Here are Ornoth, Jon, and Liam, as well as Liam's wife Maryellen. Behind them, you can see the beginning of an immense cliff which is so popular with rock climbers that there are carabiners on hangers permanently fixed to the stone face. | |
