The 1995 Boston gathering wasn't what we'd call a "Summit" today. It started out with Carlo Samson's plan to spend a week visiting Orny in Boston, and Jon Evans decided to pop in for an overnight stay. But it did set the precedent for annual writers' gatherings that would be continued the following year in Denver, and then blossom into the present form the next year in DC.
The week was jam-packed with activites. Sights included Fenway Park, a gargoyle store, Copley Square, the Hancock tower's observations deck, Faneuil Hall, the Infinite Corridor, MIT's Compton Gallery, the Computer Museum, the Gardner Museum, an exhibit of illuminated manuscripts at the Boston Public Library, the Higgins Armory Museum, the MIT Museum's holography exhibit and Hall of Hacks, the Boston Tea Party ship, a World War II destroyer, the USS Constitution, Bunker Hill Monument, several ice cream shoppes, a sex shoppe, a pornographic candy shoppe, and countless restaurants, bars, and taverns.
Activities included inline skating, a game of basketball, rock-climbing in Purgatory Chasm, sailing on the Charles River, classical concerts at the Longy School of Music and Boston University, an early music concert by the Boston Shawm and Sackbut Ensemble, and rock concerts by KMFDM, Moby, Elastica, Bim Skala Bim, and Boston locals Upper Crust, Machinery Hall, and Jules Verdone.
Amidst all that fun, we really didn't get too much Dargon work done. But, of course, that hadn't been the point, anyways. Carlo had come for a fun and exciting time, and we certainly had that!
